Monet to Matisse: Masterworks of French Impressionism

The Jepson Center at Savannah’s Telfair Museums will welcome a new exhibition from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis beginning on September 28. Monet to Matisse: Masterworks of French Impressionism, is comprised of 30 paintings and includes works by French Impressionists Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Auguste Renoir, as well as canvases by American Impressionists Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent. A diverse mix of landscapes, still lifes, and scenes of modern life in Paris, the exhibition illustrates for visitors how Impressionism, which strove to paint from nature and record modern life, radically changed the course of art history. Paintings by Post-Impressionists such as Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne, also included in the exhibition, testify to the ways in which the artistic freedom inaugurated by Impressionism laid the groundwork for future innovations.

The exhibition is organized by the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, and curated by Julie Pierotti. The presentation of the exhibition at Telfair Museums is curated by Courtney McNeil, Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs.
