Life after the fall of Communism is better than it use to be, but that does not mean it’s not harder. A unified Germany has translated into a thriving west and underpaid east, where current unemployment continues hovering at a staggering 17 percent in some cities. This is not altogether a result of the Cold War Era. The same conditions exist in parts of the United States, where interstates bypassing small towns have left people struggling and sometimes leaving in search of “Noch Besser Leben” (a better life).
