Zeitz, Germany…
Since the fall of The Wall, in 1989, a unified Germany has translated into a thriving west and underpaid east, where current unemployment continues hovering at a staggering 17 percent in some cities. The countryside is spattered with villages, like Zeitz, where more than half the residence fled after the fall of Communism. Those who stayed are finding it harder each year to get by and it indeed is depressing watching one’s village morph into a tattered memory. But this is the reality in some places there is little tourism. Rather than watch these villages fall into dilapidation, my hope is to shed light on their existence and to encourage those desirous of taking the road less traveled to consider putting them on your map. |
